Line a 13 x 9–inch metal baking pan with parchment paper. To prepare cake, combine flour, granulated sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk until well combined. Add buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; beat with an electric mixer at medium speed until well blended, 1 to 2 minutes. With mixer on medium-low speed, gradually add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. With mixer on low speed, gradually add coffee and beat until well combined (batter will be thin) Bake at 350°F until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. To prepare frosting, place butter, cocoa, and salt in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer at medium-low speed until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes. With mixer on low speed, gradually add powdered sugar until well combined. Beat in vanilla, then gradually add buttermilk. Increase mixer speed to medium and beat until frosting is fluffy and spreadable, 1 to 2 minutes. Place cooled cake on a platter. Spread frosting evenly over top and sides of cake. Reserve 2 or 3 biscuit sticks. Cut remaining biscuit sticks to varying lengths to form the graveyard fence. Seal bag; cut a tiny hole in 1 corner of bag. Pipe words onto Milano cookies to form tombstones. Arrange reserved biscuit sticks, well spaced apart, on a sheet pan lined with wax or parchment paper. Cut zip-top bag to increase the size of the hole. Pipe melted candy melts along the length of the biscuit sticks to form tree trunks, and pipe more chocolate in wavy lines to form tree branches for spooky trees. Place Milano cookies on sheet pan with spooky trees. Refrigerate until set, 5 to 10 minutes.Tuck Milano cookies into cake, spaced apart like tombstones in a graveyard. Tuck spooky chocolate trees into corners or sides of cake. Scatter candy pumpkins and ghosts onto cake as desired. FROM BETTY CROCKER RECIPES OF 1920S
